How Much Does Cosmetology School Cost in Michigan?
Cosmetology school costs in Michigan vary by school, campus, kit and mandatory fees; ESI's published historical budget lists $23,113.78 in tuition and fees plus $1,556.22 in textbooks and kit. That March 2025 disclosure is not a current enrollment quote: current tuition, kit and individual fees are [NEEDS DATA] and must be confirmed with admissions.

Start with the complete program cost
Compare the amount charged for the entire program, not a monthly payment or the first financial-aid period. ESI's cosmetology program is 1,500 clock hours, with a published full-time length of 47 weeks. The cost-of-attendance disclosure divides some costs between academic years. Adding those periods is necessary to understand the complete budget; treating the first period as the entire price would substantially understate the published amount.
The historical tuition-and-fee total and textbook-and-kit total add to $24,670.00. This calculation does not include every living expense, examination expense or possible personal purchase. It also does not establish today's contracted price. Ask Royal Oak or Utica admissions for a dated, itemized enrollment quotation identifying the program, schedule and campus, and keep that quotation alongside the catalog and enrollment agreement.
Separate school charges from living expenses
A financial-aid cost-of-attendance budget is broader than the school's bill. It can include food, housing, transportation and personal expenses, even when those amounts are not paid to the school. The ESI disclosure distinguishes students living with parents from other living arrangements. Those estimates help financial-aid planning, but they are not promises that a particular student's rent, groceries or travel will match the allowance.
Create two lists: mandatory school charges and your own monthly expenses while attending. School charges may include tuition, books, professional tools and required fees. Personal expenses may include commuting, childcare, approved clothing and ordinary classroom supplies. ESI's textbook-and-kit disclosure states that textbook and kit charges are separate from tuition and fees. Confirm the contents, taxes and replacement policy before comparing one school's kit with another.
Understand aid without confusing it with a discount
ESI's Financial Aid page states that its Royal Oak and Utica campuses participate in federal student aid for those who qualify. Individual eligibility and the exact program's eligibility still need review. Completing the FAFSA is a request for aid consideration, not a guarantee of a grant, an approval for every loan or a promise that the full balance will disappear.
When you receive an aid offer, separate grants and scholarships from loans. Grants generally do not require repayment if their conditions are met; loans do require repayment under their terms. Ask the financial-aid office to explain disbursement dates, any remaining balance, satisfactory academic progress and the effects of an attendance interruption. Use the official Federal Student Aid website for current application and eligibility guidance rather than paying a third party to submit a FAFSA.
Compare quotations using the same checklist
Ask each school whether its quotation includes the complete program, all required kit items, textbooks and taxes. Confirm whether exam preparation materials, actual licensing examinations and the license application are separate. Find out how additional hours, replacement supplies or schedule changes are handled, without assuming such charges will occur. Written refund and withdrawal policies are as important as the opening price.
Price alone does not describe the learning environment. Compare supervised student-salon experience, the campus commute, scheduled class times and published outcome reporting definitions. ESI reports an 11:1 student-to-instructor ratio; ask how that ratio applies during theory and clinic instruction. No school price, brand partnership or historic placement percentage guarantees employment, a particular income or a successful exam result.
Plan before signing an enrollment agreement
The net price calculator can help you explore a possible cost after estimated grant assistance, but it is not a personalized final aid offer. Estimates should be checked against the current written tuition sheet and your actual financial-aid decision. Do not replace an official quote with an older amount found in a search result, social post or an archived consumer disclosure.
Visit the campus you intend to attend and discuss your likely start date, weekly availability and living costs. Royal Oak admissions is available at 248-965-3352 and Utica admissions at 586-884-4686. Before signing, request current tuition, kit, mandatory fees and the program's aid eligibility in writing. The cosmetology program page, financial-aid disclosures and campus pages provide a starting point for that conversation.
